Winchester Walk – 4.9 miles, 2.5 hours
10 places available
Please complete the Day Event Booking Form once your place has been confirmed.
A delightful, circular and easy river walk into the ancient city of Winchester and back.
The walk starts at 11.30 from the Winchester East Park and Ride car park. Please head to Area 5 of the car park where we will be meeting in the far corner by a footpath and green council wheelie bin. Parking is a flat rate of £3.00 per day when arriving after 10.30am.
Our route takes the Pilgrims’ Trail alongside the Itchen navigation into the city. Amongst a host of stunning medieval buildings, we will pass the only remaining part of the Roman walls (a very small part), the old City Mill (now National Trust), King Alfred’s statue, and the striking Guild Hall before turning into the impressive Cathedral Close.
Winchester Cathedral is over 900 years old and reputedly the second largest in Europe, it is the longest in the gothic style.
We will stop for you to buy and eat any lunchtime refreshments you fancy in the Cathedral Refectory before continuing on through the beautiful Inner Close and out of the Cathedral grounds. We then pass the world famous Winchester College and, shortly after, Wolvesley Castle (which is the ruin of what was once a magnificent medieval bishop’s palace).
Our route then joins the crystal clear, river Itchen itself as its passes through the water meadows and the Winchester College playing fields. Next we pass another medieval treasure, the Hospital of St Cross, England’s oldest Alms House.
Finally, we circle back and pass the imposing Iron Age hill fort of St Catherine’s Hill and and head back to the car park for around 3pm.
